Description and Details of Incident:

     Advances in auto technology with keyless devices, commonly known as key fob has caused a substantial increase in car burglaries and auto thefts throughout the State of New Jersey. Although, this technology has added a level of convenience, it has also created opportunities for a criminals to burglarize and steal vehicles without having to force entry.

     The Borough of Fort Lee experienced a 17 of automobile burglaries and 4 automobile thefts from August 17, 2018 through August 28, 2018. The Fort Lee Police Department General Investigations Bureau immediately initiated an investigation and promptly discovered that the burglaries and auto thefts had crossed their jurisdictional borders into Englewood Cliffs, Ridgefield Park, Cliffside Park, Palisades Park and Leonia. An extensive multi-jurisdictional investigation was conducted and with the assistance of the aforesaid jurisdictions. Special assistance with the investigation was given by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Bergen County Sheriff’s Department, and the Hudson County Prosecutors Office. This investigation led to the arrest of Felipe Santos and Kshawn Jackson both of Jersey City, New Jersey.   Felipe Santos was criminally charged with 17 counts of burglary to motor vehicles and 4 counts of Theft of Motor Vehicle. Kshawn N. Jackson was criminally charged with 2 counts of theft of motor vehicle. In addition, charges were levied for delinquency against five juveniles from Jersey City and Union City. No additional information will be released about the juveniles. This investigation is an excellent example of multiple law enforcement agencies working together to solve a crime plaguing our area.

     The Fort Lee Police Department would like to remind the public to please lock their vehicles and don’t leave keys or key fobs inside. Please keep your valuables out of sight or take them with you. Lastly, always report suspicious activity to the police department.
